Measure 43

She takes a glance at measure 43
As she rosins up her bow
And while I can’t decide if she’s oblivious to me
It’s too late for me to act like I don’t know
She says she likes to think it’s just enough
She says she likes Spanish guitars
And solving other peoples’ problems keeps her occupied
During moments of her time
When I’m the last thing on her mind
Nearly all the time
And I’ve only got this last day
To make something out of nothing
And then it goes away
In the dark beyond the lights
I hear them sing, “good-bye, good night”
I’ll recall the letters of her name
And the curve of her waistline
And never know what she meant when she briefly touched my arm
It’s too late for me to ask, I’ll never know
I didn’t come here for this
I didn’t plan to meet you
And while I sit here – doing what I’m supposed to do
I go over in my head, what
I’m afraid will be
The last thing that I said – that I said to you
